Winter grass and dragon’s breath
Frost warriors fight the dream
Trees shiver and wonders linger
Ice crystals hold extreme

Sky hides and the moon is lost
Cold solitude of a sullen wind
Pond blackens cracked with ice
Where a sparrow can’t quite land

Slanting lines of freezing rain
Desolate ghost shapes disappear
‘cept lonely-hearted snowdrops
There are no tea-pickers here

Washed white, crisp and cruel
Colour melds to a distant squall
Floating eerily through space
And still the snowflakes fall ...
