Sharks and Rays

During daylight hours, Whitetip reef sharks slumber together in docile gangs. Their adapted, streamlined bodies enable them to access favourite prey that hide in the crevices of a reef.

Whitetips are an IUCN Near Threatened species. Under ever-increasing pressure from the finning trade their numbers, like other sharks, are in decline. Shark-fin soup remains an unsustainable, high-status delicacy in many parts of the world. It is one of the most expensive seafood products available. Value is dependant on the type and quality of fin. Black market prices over tens of thousands of dollars per fin have been paid for trophy species. It is a multibillion-dollar global industry that disregards and defies measures to contain it.
