Hunting Jacks - 2nd Place, BSoUP July '20

2nd Place, British Society of Underwater Photographers (BSoUP) - Focus on Wide Angle competiton. July 2020

"Jacks hunting in the surf. This is an image that oozes power - both the power of the predatory fish and the power of the sea in the background. The exposure and the lighting are spot on and serve to emphasise the texture of the fish without blowing out the highlights. The limited colour palette makes for a graphic image that suits the subject extremely well. A great shot!"

BITE-BACK 2021

November's pin-up for Bite-Back's stunning 2021 calendar is this image. Joining an awesome lineup of world-class underwater photographers including: Alex Mustard, Amanda Cotton, Christian Vizl, David Doubilet, Doug Perrine, Ellen Cuylaerts, George Probst, Greg Lecouer, Jason Isley, Shawn Heinrichs and Tanya Houppermans. Stoked to have my work included.

“This edition is packed with spectacular images to celebrate the marine environment in all its glory,” says the charity’s campaign director Graham Buckingham. “Significantly, every purchase of this calendar will directly fund our campaigns to end the trade and consumption of shark products in the UK.”

And my accompanying short write-up ...

Bigeye Jacks

Dusk, and the mood on the reef changes like the flick of a switch. Bigeye Jacks patrol the rocky ledges of their remote volcanic seamount. Using the surf to camouflage their presence and the surge to boost their strike speed, it’s time to hunt. The dinner bell has rung and the big guns are back in town. Up above, the ocean is wild and unbuttoned. The wind has whipped up and the swell is high. Other than that, there’s not a hint of the drama unfolding below.

Much like this scene, hidden beneath the waves of time, our actions and their consequences play out in equally dramatic ways. We must tread lightly on our precious planet, lighter than we have been, that it can move to its own heartbeat and rhythm.
