Shards of Glass - Winner 'Sunbeams' Competition, BSoUP August '25

Really delighted to have won this particular BSoUP competition (Sunbeams) with my image 'Shards of Glass'. One of my all time favourite dive sites on Planet Earth is this place. Kukulkan, the entrance cavern of the Chac-Mool cave system in Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. The light is dazzling, capturing it a challenge, but just being in the water and seeing those rays dance is so damn special.

"I thought I might go for an original take on the theme but in the end I just couldn’t fight the appeal of glorious conditions for sunbeams in a Mexican cenote, with a very photogenic model. It’s a shot taken countless times but this is an excellent example. The light, through the dappled surface to the sunbeams to the dapples on the stones, is beautiful. The diver’s bubbles are in my view complementary too. One niggle if I may is that there appears to be a halo around the diver – a processing artefact? Something to look into, but otherwise I felt it was a worthy winner; many congratulations to the photographer."
