Local Hero

Late afternoon and the sun is sinking over the pristine seagrass meadows of Little Bahama Bank. Tiger sharks frequently cruise these waters - hunters by night, opportunistic scavengers by day. Close by, the water is often chummed with fish blood, bones and off-cuts like barracuda heads. With their keen sense of smell, sharks soon appear to investigate.

Moving away from the activity generated around the boat it’s possible to engage with these animals in a natural setting. I wanted to photograph the shark in its habitat using only ambient, natural light and no strobe. Working with the patterns of sun rays and the moody shadows they create, I was able to capture this intimate portrait.
