With their tentacles out, Jewel anemones feast on zooplankton that floats past on an ocean current. Together they can form dense, colourful meadows numbering hundreds of animals. These were found in one of their favourite spots, under a dimly lit, rocky overhang in chilly, 11°C water. Each anemone has up to 100 stinging tentacles, all topped with a jaunty blob.
Hidden amongst the forest of vivid arms are a family of tiny amphipods, perfectly camouflaged. The more you look, the more you find. You can just see their feelers and dinky bodies. There are two near the top of the photograph, one is a little to the right of centre, the other close by.
